Search Fund Team Building Survey: Selected Observations

Peter Kelly, Sara Heston, Andrew Freiman. (2023)

Stanford GSB Case E-841, 9 pp

Dated 09/03/23. A one-off survey of executive hiring and firing in the first two years after acquisition: "Surveys were emailed to 60 CEOs; 40 responded" in April 2023 (p1). Findings: "83 percent hired at least one senior employee during the first two years post-acquisition and 68 percent had at least one senior employee leave"; respondents were "more likely to report that personnel decisions took place too late (49 percent) versus too soon (2 percent)"; "there was no clear correlation between the pace of hiring and departures and the return on investment (ROI) of the acquisition" (p1). Small, self-selected sample of search fund CEOs; no fund-level data.
